Citizens UK General Election Meeting Halifax

March 11, 2015 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

In 2010, Citizens UK (CUK) persuaded the new government to change the law in order to abolish the imprisonment of children for immigration purposes. This was preceded with six months of small teams of citizens meeting with MP candidates in constituencies across the UK to persuade them to support what we called ‘The Sanctuary Pledge’.

In 2015 CUK members have voted to press the new government on the ‘CUK’s 2015 Pledge’ to:

  1. Implement the CUK Social Care Charter calling for dignity at work for care workers, enough time for visits, better relationships between the care worker and care recipient and proper training.
  2. End the indefinite detention of migrants. The UK is the only European country to still detain people indefinitely. 3,300 people are currently locked up, most of whom have not been convicted of a crime, costing the taxpayer £164m a year.

In the run up to the General Election we are working with hundreds of local institutions in over 130 marginal constituencies to meet with their parliamentary candidates. The training is for anyone who supports either of our two aims to build teams, to agree strategy and tactics and to then meet with MP candidates to ask them to support the CUK’s 2015 Pledge. This will culminate in a Citizens UK General Election Assembly with the Prime Ministerial candidates.
