Following the success of their NCS Programmes, the Brathay Trust are looking to increase their sessional staff pool for summer 2018. If you enjoy creating a positive impact in the lives of young people, then this role is for you.
As a Team Leader you will be responsible for leading a team of up to 15 young people on the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme, supported by a Team Assistant. Leading by example is an essential part of being a Team Leader, showcasing the attitude and spirit that is needed to tackle the challenges that face participants on the programme and in life.
You must be enthusiastic in relating to young people and encouraging full participation in the programme. Your Team Assistant will assist you in overseeing and ensuring each individual young person has a fantastic experience on the programme.
Phase 1 (Week 1) – Ambleside/Coniston at one of our sites
The Monday morning of your chosen start date, staff and participants will meet at 9.15am at The inspire Centre, Calderdale College and travel up to the Lakes together by coach and will be staying at one of their sites. On arrival participants will begin taking part in lots of outbound activities like Ghyll scrambling, kayaking/canoeing, high ropes course, high V’s, rock climbing wall, all aboard high platform, Pamper pole and mountain exploration among many more activities, too many to mention. Participants will return home around 5.00pm Friday afternoon.
Phase 2 (Week 2) – Leeds Sugarwell Court Campus
The second week of the programme will be run from University Halls, Sugarwell Court, Meanwood Road, Leeds, LS7 2DJ, where the young people stay for the week on campus building valuable skills around living independently, there are a number of activities which they take part in throughout the week, i.e. First Aid, Self Defence, Bite the Ballot etc. (further details of the activity programme will be shared on the staff training day). Young people arrive independently at Sugarwell Court on the Monday and leave at lunch time on Friday of that week.
Phase 3 – Run from Calderdale College (Social Action planning & Delivery)
After the weekend, the participants will meet up at Calderdale College each morning days are expected to run 9am-4.30pm. Throughout this week the young people will design and deliver a community project. This might involve taking part in a dragons den type of activity to share ideas and pitch it to a local business or councillors for funding, workers support young people to make choices of their chosen social action projects.
Previously, participants have organised fun days, bonfires, car washes, redecorated community centres, gyms, parks and raised hundreds of pounds for charities in a variety of extremely creative and fun ways.
Once the social action has finished, there will be a graduation event in order to celebrate the fantastic achievements that will have been accomplished throughout the programme. The graduation event is normally in early September.
