Calderdale SmartMove have been helping vulnerable people across the Borough for the last 16 years. Their main priority is to assist homeless and vulnerably housed individuals and families find safe and secure accommodation. This can be in either social housing or the private rented sector, and with the latter SmartMove provide the bond on behalf of the client. Once accommodation is found, a Support Worker is designated and will work with the client for up to 15 months with the aim of helping to sustain their tenancy and to help with multiple associated issues.
SmartMove operate a learning centre and the courses presently being covered are positive parenting, eating healthily on a budget, building a CV, maths and English, general budgeting and how to maintain a successful tenancy. All services are free to clients including cook and eat sessions and grow your own both undertaken at the SmartMove allotment.
They also undertake homelessness prevention workshops in 38 local schools and source and deliver furniture for clients again at no cost.
On top of Council contracts, SmartMove need to fundraise an additional £140k per annum to continue to offer all of the services they provide. Their next event is a Wild West night on the 19th September at La Casa in Brighouse. The cost is £15 per head which includes a hog roast, vegetarian options and a live Ceilidh band. 250 people can be catered for and at the time of writing 176 have been sold, anyone wanting to support the event please contact Stuart Rumney on 01422 361515.
