The Home Office is inviting organisations across the UK to apply to the £1million Capacity Building for Community Sponsorship of Refugees scheme.
The fund aims to support the Community Sponsorship scheme which enables community groups to welcome and support refugee families coming into the UK. Sponsor groups can include charities, businesses, local authorities, community groups and third sector organisations.
The Government is offering the funding to give experienced organisations the resources to provide training and support to groups who want to sponsor refugees.
Organisations with relevant experience are encouraged to apply to the fund, which seeks to achieve a number of different outcomes including the following:
- Training for community groups on how to welcome and support refugees in their area, and how to apply to become sponsors.
- Connecting people and organisations who want to help resettled refugees through community sponsorship.
- Raising awareness of community sponsorship across different UK communities.
There is a total of £1 million available in grant funding over two financial years (2018/19 and 2019/20). An additional £200,000 may also be available to facilitate mobilisation timescales. Given that there are a number of different lots, it is expected that, depending on the quality of bids, a number of organisations will be funded.
Commenting on the new fund, Minister of State for Immigration Brandon Lewis said:
“The community sponsorship scheme has got off to an excellent start and this funding will help the scheme develop even further.
“I wholeheartedly encourage organisations who feel that they can help to grow the community sponsorship scheme to apply for this funding.”
