Holocaust Memorial Day 2019 Commemoration Event

January 31 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

‘Torn from home’ encourages us to reflect on how the enforced loss of a safe place to call ‘home’ is part of the trauma faced by anyone experiencing persecution and genocide. ‘Home’ usually means a place of safety, comfort and security.

On Holocaust Memorial Day 2019, we will reflect on what happens when individuals, families and communities are driven out of, or wrenched from their homes, because of persecution or the threat of genocide, alongside the continuing difficulties survivors face as they try to find and build new homes when the genocide is over.

The event will include:

  • A testimony from Ms. Iby Knill, Auschwitz survivor, followed by a Q&A session
  • Short talks from learner’s on this year’s HMD theme: ‘Torn from home’
  • A representative of the Interfaith Council to speak.
  • Rudi Leavor – chant of the “El Male Rachamim”
  • Sisters United – A brief talk on the journey reflecting being ‘Torn from home’
  • Reciting the Peace Prayer
  • Displays throughout the room from our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Students, including postcards to survivors and posters

Refreshments will be available before and during the event
