Landlines and Watermarks celebrates an amazing place and its amazing people and has been commissioned by Calderdale Council and the Community Foundation for Calderdale in response to the floods of 2015 with support from Arts Council England, Big Lottery and Tipping Point.
The Big Weekend revolves around two events: ‘Calderland’ and ‘The People’s Fair’.
Calderland – The People’s Opera
Fri 29th Sept, Sat 30th Sept, Sun 1st Oct, 7pm (free entry but tickets required)
Join us on a marvellous musical and visual journey through the Calder Valley’s watery past, present and future, presented in the extraordinary Piece Hall Courtyard and performed by local singers and musicians.
Written by Mike Kenny (international playwright and Olivier Award winner for his adaptation of The Railway Children) and composed by Richard Taylor (winner of two UK Theatre Awards), Calderland is a musical odyssey around the valley’s history and its relationship with water. Featuring a 150-member community choir, orchestra, large-scale video projections and live performance. The performance lasts 1½ hours including a 30 minute interval (estimated finish time 8.30pm). The People’s Fair
Sat 30th Sept & Sun 1st Oct, 11-5pm (free entry)
A family-friendly festival, marketplace and street party, The People’s Fair is a showcase for the Calder Valley’s creative and community talent, independent businesses and civic organisations. Expect local food, street performances, artists and artisans, voluntary groups, showcases for local talent, parades and processions, market stalls and exhibition. Featuring hands on activities and performances throughout the day including Mr Wilson’s Second Liners, Pif Paf, Plunge Boom, 2 Destination Language, Handmade Parade, Fire & Water and much more.
