Modern Day Slavery Session

October 20, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

This Modern Day Slavery Session is taking place during Calderdale Safeguarding Week.

Slavery is not an issue confined to history or an issue that only exists in certain countries – it is something that is still happening today. Over 3,000 people, including nearly 1,000 children, were referred to British authorities as potential victims of slavery in 2015, Modern slavery has been getting increasingly more attention both from the mainstream media and the government, which culminated with passing the Modern Slavery Act in 2015.

There is no one face of modern slavery: There is no typical victim of slavery – victims can be men, women and children of all ages and cut across the population. But it is normally more prevalent amongst the most vulnerable, minority or socially excluded groups.

Training has been commissioned from the charity Hope For Justice to deliver frontline briefings on Modern Day Slavery. There will be monthly briefings taking place up to April 2017, as well as 3 training sessions. The training will teach frontline staff:

  • What human trafficking is and the different types that exist;
  • How to recognise the signs/indicators of trafficking; and
  • How to respond appropriately to a victim and a case of human trafficking should they come across one

The next session will take place at Room 20, Terrace Room, Hebden Bridge Town Hall, St George’s St, Hebden Bridge, HX7 7BY

You’re welcome to bring your lunch with you. Sessions are free, places limited to 25 participants based on a first come basis. To book your place please complete a proforma and send to Julie.hartley@calderdale.gov.uk. For future dates go to: Learning and Improvement page on the Calderdale SCB website.
