The Halifax Gibbet is quite unique in England. There is no other known execution instrument like it and it still stands today on its namesake road Gibbet Street. From the 13th Century this deadly instrument was used to execute any thieves who stole goods over the value of 13 ½ D. (in modern day approx. £40) and have their head cut off!
On Saturday 2nd February the official unveiling of the new Heritage information board will take place by The Mayor & Mayoress of Calderdale. The event will start at 2pm at the Gibbet, and then a guided walk will follow down into Halifax Town Centre to the The Piece Hall, we you can see the original blade from the 17th century, which is on show at the Heritage Centre. Free refreshments will be available at the Piece Hall. You can also find out more about the abundance of history Calderdale has on offer.
