Due to the very warm weather at present with a forecast of more hot, dry weather and a large moorland fire on Saddleworth Moor, there is an increased risk here in Calderdale from Wildfire.
The Met Office severity index for Wildfire in Calderdale over the next few days is:
- FSI level 4 = very high fire severity
For more information on severity index see link: metoffice.gov.uk/weather/fire-severity-index
Over the last 2 months there has been prevention activities taking place on the moors in Calderdale, including joint visits to landowners from the Police, Fire and Council officers warning of the dangers of fires and also the penalties for starting fires. There has also been a programme of putting up signs in strategic areas to highlight wildfire potential (See attached and please share through your communication streams).
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service are instructing their Wildfire crews to visit the potential ‘hotspots’ for potential fires to provide reassurance and visibility to the public and checking all access points.
The Community Safety Wardens are being tasked to visit vulnerable sites over the course of the week.
