Speak With IT are recruiting volunteers to join their exciting Speech Therapy programme. They assist patients suffering from Aphasia to recover their verbal communication ability, this maintains their ability to influence their environment, maintain social relationships and improve their quality of life.
Aphasia is a condition that affects parts of the brain responsible for understanding and using language. It is commonly caused by Stroke, Severe Head Injury, Brain Tumour and Progressive Neurological Conditions. Without appropriate treatments, patients are likely to suffer from social isolation because of their problem in communication.
With kindness and compassion the volunteer Speech Support Worker will support individuals dealing with communication problems caused by Aphasia to regain or improve their speech, communication skills and confidence.
They will provide valuable 1-to-1 coaching to patients in using specialist Speech and Language therapy software programmes. Volunteers will visit clients at their own home to provide assistance on using the programmes.
They are looking for someone who is IT literate, friendly, positive and patient. A self starter who is able to work independently. This opportunity would particularly benefit students who are keen to develop a career in speech and language therapy.
Availability must be during the day due to the nature of the physical condition the people we help are living with.
Owning your own transport is definitely an advantage but not mandatory.
All volunteers are subject to Enhanced DBS checks.
You can find out more about them, and find an application form on their website: http://www.speakwithit.org
